Howdy, my name is Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) J. Mark Spencer. I am the Senior Army Instructor for the Army JROTC Program at Alvarado High School. After four years in the Corps of Cadets, I graduated from Texas A&M University on May 6,1972 majoring in Political Science. Upon graduation from A&M, I entered active duty in the U.S. Army as a Second Lieutenant. I remained on active duty with the U.S. Army until June 30, 1993 when I retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. During that time, I served three tours in Germany (1970's, 1980's and 1990's).
Upon retirement from active military service, I began my new career as a Senior Army Instructor in a newly established Army JROTC Program at Duncan High School, Duncan, Oklahoma for 10 years. In the summer of 2003, I departed Duncan and opened a new Army JROTC Program at Alvarado High School. I am now into my 15th year at AHS and my 25th year as an Army JROTC Senior Army Instructor.
On a personal note, I married Ava, my high school sweetheart from Enterprise High School, Enterprise, Alabama on October 1, 1983 while assigned to the 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas. Ava and I are "Army Brats" given that both our fathers were Army Officers. I met Ava at a Little League Baseball game in the summer of 1965 at Fort Rucker, Alabama. Both of our brothers were on the same team. Ava and I have two adult children, Christina Eberhardt and Robert L. "Spence" Spencer. Christina graduated from Duncan High School in 2003 and Spence graduated from Alvarado High School in 2007. Both are married and live within a short drive from Alvarado.
