Alvarado junior Isabella Weatherby won the schools first girls powerlifting state championship last week with a total lifted weight of 885 pounds.
She found herself needing to do her personal best in the deadlift in order to win the state championship last week after trailing by five pounds heading into the last event.
Weatherby could not tie as she would have lost the tie breaker so she managed to leave not doubt and top the second place lifter by 15 pounds to take the championship.
“I’m sure whatever weight they would have put on that bar, she would have lifted it,” coach Scott Svendsen said. “She is a competitor and she was not going to lose.”
Weatherby tied a personal best on the bench press and her deadlift was five pounds heavier than she lifted two weeks prior at the regional meet.
